So girlfriend's 82 volvo is broken down.
Its in my driveway now, and I've been trying to diagnose the source of the problem. Parts are FRIGGIN EXPENSIVE for this thing. So I need to get this right on the first try or two.
The car will start, and run for about 20-30 seconds, and then stall. Usually won't start after that.
I pulled the plugs, they're fouled, really bad. Cleaned them, restarted the car, ran for about a minute then dies again and won't restart. Left it to sit for about 2 days, came back out, and the plugs are soaked in gas, taking the breather off, the head smells like gas. I started the car, and the oil light stayed on, and the fuel gauge is down a bit.
Something's leaking fuel into the crankcase, even with the key off. Injectors maybe?
So I pull each injector out inividually, two of them seem to have an okay spray pattern, and two more are questionable. I figure just replace them. Couldn't find an easy way to get them off the fuel rail, so I pulled the whole rail with the injectors attached. More to come on this later.
Cold Start injector, had a bunch of gas around the plug, so I figure its a leaker too. Go figure they decided to use two small Allen head things which are impossible to reach from almost any angle with the engine in the car....Easiest way seems to be to pull the intake manifold. So I do that, get the CS injector is out, and I check the resistance level to that. Bounces between .3 Ohms and .6 ohms. Seems ok.
Volvo, in their infinate widsom for the LH-Jetronic fuel injection in 1981 and 1982 have the fuel injectors pressed into these little 2" rubber hose with a anodized collar on both the injector end and the Fuel rail end. AND THEY DO NOT COME OFF ACCORDING TO THE DEALERSHIP. How Retarded.
Going to the boneyard today to try to find a new fuel rail and injectors. I'd like to get the 83+ fuel rail with the removable bungs for the injectors. _________________

with the fuel rail still attached, but off the motor, key on engine off, and check to see which fuel injectors are leaking, if any. Your problem sounds like some sensor is bad, which tells the fuel injectors to dump fuel in, I am not sure about volvos, but on a gm motor, I would suspect the coolant temp sensor...
Aside from that, how is the tune? |

Wait, is this system like the Bosch CIS systems? Or is this actualy and EFI system?

I remember seeing something about it bing a Constant Injection System, but I also remember a note that said something like "Do not confuse this CIS system with Bosch CIS." I'll look in the book and double check.
Two of the injectors should be replaced anyhow. I ended up cutting the little fuel line between the rail and injector on two of the questionable ones. I guess I could very carefully cut the collars and go to Oil Filter Service and have new fuel lines braided to it.
I grabbed a B23F manifold from the JY off an 84' 242 DL. It has the LH-Jettronic 2 injection system.
Only concerns with the B23 Manifold seemed to be no Cold Start injector (but the manifold has a bung for it) Slightly different fuel rail and injectors (might not be a big deal, but I have to find out the rating on them and if they're powered the same as the B21 Injectors) and I could not find a fuel pressure return line anywhere on it and Megan's car has one. _________________

alright, so I guess the B23 manifold isn't going to work. It rotates the throttle body almost 180 degrees, so the leverage changes, to where to open the throttle it'll have to be a "push" rather than a pull from the cable.
John, the chilton book said this:
"The Volvo CIS system is an idle air bypass valve. It is not to be confused with the Bosch Continuous Injection System (also called CIS), or any of its varients found on many Volvo models."
I need to replace two injectors, and the Fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail. Having a hard time finding the former. Every parts store only seems to carry the injectors for the B23 CIS system. Even had the doofus at Autozone try to tell me they "should be the same" after I showed him the physical difference between the injectors.
I've also deleted the Cold start injector. From what I understand, its only necessary in extreme temperature conditions for startup. I don't see a reason for it, and since it leaks anyhow.....*shrug*
Just need to find injectors, and this beast should be on the road. _________________
