|
|
Well, today I my friend in Marysville finally had some free time to help me out with that stupid bolt on the rear of the passenger side header, I decided to replace the gasket at the same time.
After a few hours of fighting with it, we decided to remove some extra interference out of the way to make room for hands and arms. We finally got the bolt in and started to get some turns on it, when it decided it had turned far enough. I ended up backing it all the way out after another exceedingly long time and found some rusty gunk on the bottom 2 or 3 threads. We decided that either there was debris in the bolt hole, or that a bottom tap was not used when the block was made, so we ended up grinding off the bottom few threads of the bolt. It worked and the header is all tight.
Still the car is extremely rich (which I expected) and still pops in the exhaust at idle. Mechanic that he is, my friend says it is unburned fuel being ignited by the cat and that maybe a heated O2 sensor could help. _________________ 92 Camaro

| See tony's post talking about heated o2 sensors. |

Thanks, I had a hard time finding that. It may or may not help. I might also have a small leak at the Y-pipe connection as I could hear it under acceleration from under the car. Aside from that, my best option is to have someone help me tweak on the PROM tune... _________________ 92 Camaro

| Don't drive it around a lot if its running that rich you will clog the cat and that is always a tricky problem to spot and a pain in the ass. |

No worries there, this isn't the daily driver and it sits for a week or more at a time. This has the stock tune PROM, and likes to run rich with the headers as the only mod. _________________ 92 Camaro

Headers should make it run leaner. If it's really running excessively rich your o2 is bad or you have something else going on.
Could also be a weak ignition, etc. |

It was running just fine with the exception of that small exhaust leak after welding up the SFCs. I put on the headers and take care of the major leaks and still pops through the exhaust and very rich at idle - upper RPMs are fine for the most part, I think I still have a small leak at the y-pipe connection. The O2 is brand new, the only difference is that it's a few inches farther downstream than with the manifold, maybe as far as a foot and at the end of the collector. I have heard that it should be as close to the head as possible for proper operation. _________________ 92 Camaro

Just thought of something I should check. I had to lengthen the harness end of the O2 connector so that it could reach the new location. The new location is on the back side of the collector where the original was on the front side and a little closer to the head. Being rotated around like that, I needed wire to cover about twice the length of the sensor. Maybe my splice isn't secure??? Would be like running with no O2. _________________ 92 Camaro
