So i was wondering about what is required to make it so i can run an 87 iroc without the front license plate in Washington and just run the bow tie grill w/ fog lights?
Once this is done do you have to keep your old license plate in your front window and what not?

I don't know the exact legality of it, but I just threw mine up on the dashboard so you can see it clearly through the windshield.

Same here but I live in Oregon. A fellow coworker of mine got pulled over for this though. The police officer told him that it needed to be on the drivers side of the dash rather than the passenger side.

I've been pulled over about 6 times when I had no front license plate and have yet to be pulled over after I've put one up on my dash behind the windshield. Gotta take it down for the track though, it's a safety issue. Unless you get some suction cups and mount the plate to the windshield.

I did some quick searching and all I've read is that it needs to be clearly visible from the front of the vehicle and no more than 4 feet from the ground.

I just modified the front end so i have no more mounting brackets. Very Happy I keep my license plate in front of the passenger in the window and have yet to be pulled over.

i bolted mine to my air dam...

in texas, the law states it must be visible from 2 and 20 feet.
you just have to be on your knees to see it at 2 feet.

no problems after 6 months with it that way... front end certainly looks better too

i've had a couple different cars where i didn't have a front plate. on my of my 4th gens, there weren't any holes to put on, and i wasn't going to make any!
for these vehicles, i got some small suction cups and put it up on the dash and suctioned it to the windshield. i did get pulled over for it, but the cop liked the set up, he didn't write a ticket.

I've been pulled over countless times for my dash mounted front plate. Cops around here just don't like me or my car.

Althought technically it's legal, it's the forward portion of the vehical within 54" of the ground which is the RCW.

Actually, in most cases a plate on the windshield is not legal. In addition to the 48" max height (which isn't a problem for an F-body, unless it was lifted up by your neighborhood redneck), there's also a maximum size of view-blocking material that can be in your line-of-site. I haven't looked through the RCW for Washington's limit, but in CA it was 4" square, which is much less than a plate.

FWIW, I've never had a front plate on my car, spent 5 years with it in CA, and am up to 7 in WA, and I've only been pulled over once, and it was a contextual stop (I had my best friend, a police officer, with me in the car at the time). She pulled me over for the plate as the "excuse," but she was actually profiling. She, of course, did not ticket me.

In any case, I refuse to put a plate on the front of the car. I'll take the fix-it ticket, pay the $10, and get the required sign-off, then promptly remove the plate again.

Here's the RCW for plate display:
http://apps.leg.wa.gov/RCW/default.aspx?cite=46.16.240

Here's the unobstructed view RCW, although it doesn't specify size limitations:

$10??? I seriously hate Oregon's fines. They are using "justice" as an excuse to rake in some money. One of the numerous times that I was pulled over for the lack of a front license plate the officer told me that it was a $250 fine. Am I the only one who thinks that is absolutely ridiculous? It's also a $220 fine for a "California" stop. They are taking this to an absurd level.

I also know what you mean about the profiling thing. I have been pulled over a couple times because I looked "nervous" or "suspicious." I don't do anything or wear anything to look suspicious, I simply drive. Often times the first words out of a police officers mouth are "Is this your car?" Granted I am a teenager but that still isn't good enough grounds to just pull me over. Another time a biker cop was hassling my friend becuase he was wearing a lap belt.

Ah the curse of being a teenager in a sports car.

Get a mullet and a fake mustach Very Happy

I was pulled over before. I explained that some kids ripped it off the car and that I was trying to find a new one at the junkyard. It worked. I've been pulled over just that once.

Quick question for Kage and guys running collector plates: how big of a stink do they make if you run them on your daily, or a car that gets a lot more driving than a weekend warrior?

As far as I know, if you have collector plates the car is basically a hobbie. It should only be driven to/from car shows or for maintainance. Not daily driving.

Laughing I know the legality of them, I was just wondering about enforcement. In either case, I'm still a decade away from that.
