so, a friend of mine who's kind of a gearhead took a ride in my Camaro today.
while telling him about the motor and its *caughblowbycaugh* problem, he mentioned that I might do well to hone it and re-ring if I needed to do it on the cheap (which I kind of do)
I guess it kind of got me thinking that maybe instead of an entire rebuild, as I was orginally thinking, I might do well to save myself some green and just do as he suggested.
It'll take me quite a bit of time to get some money put away if I do the whole rebuild, but I could easily do the hone job and re-ring between Sept and January (I.e. dyno)
i dunno, I just hate the idea of having to put my car in hibernation (jail?) for an extended period of time, so quick and cheap, is always welcome!
I'm sure the final plan will depend on the condition of the bores. I know, as it sits now, my "buildup" plan for this engine will probably put me in the hole nearly 3k between machine work and parts. Hopefully though, it will net me about 290-320hp and somewhere close on torque.
Gah! this is a long post, I dunno, just kind of brainstorming and throwing out thoughts. Crewbie feedback, negative, positive, whatever, is always welcome.

| with 156K i would imagine it needs a full overhaul by now, but you might get lucky. only way to find out is to take it down. if i were you chris i would do this BEFORE selling your reliable transportation. |

well a friend of mine is letting me borrow his Ford Ranger indefinately, since he never drives it anymore. So transportation from A-B won't be too much of an issue if I sell the newer Camaro and have the white one down. _________________

| Were you going to keep your existing motor? Or did you intend to build a new one up and then swap motors? |

I'm not sure, I know the crank and rods will probably get reused from the engine that's in there now. I have a bare block on my engine stand, 4 bolt main, all the threads are in good shape, bores look pretty good. Its more or less ready to go to the machine shop for work. I even pulled all the old frost plugs out.
I don't know if the motor in the car now is a 2 bolt or 4 bolt. Both the motor in there now and the one on the stand have the same casting #'s. The motor in there now has broken bolt and part of an easy out stuck on the fuel pump mounting pad. The bolt that's in there now is kind of sitting sideways, but it doesn't seem to leak oil. _________________

It'd give you a chance to take a look at the block.
Re Rings are nasty on motors that haven't been tanked. God knows the milage and taper on the bore or what pistons are in there now. IF the bore is too bad (check with a mic) then you gotta punch it. Re ring wont hold.
Could be a 200k .040 over setup that needs bigger pistons. |

yeah...that's true.
I'm finding more weird stuff about this motor, the more I've torn into it, so who's to say how bad things are in there.
keep the feedback coming guys. _________________

| That's what I did to mine about 5 years ago. I did have it hot tanked, checked for cracks, freeze plugs, and cam bearings installed. Also had them polish the crank. Ended up buying a set of flat top pistons and put it all back together with standard bearings, pistons, and rings. She has held up pretty good, but she is also pretty loose. Runs 10 psi oil pressure hot at an idle. The cylinders were still in spec as far as wear and taper, but it should have been bored. Just didn't have the coin back then. |
