Hi everybody! Yesterday before work I reset that detent cable thingy cause it was shifting a little soon (but smooth). Well now it seems the transmission doesnt wanna shift like it should. I'll have to speed up and let off and then I'll get a *pause* and it'll shift hard in to the next gear. Before when just cruising at say,35-45mph it would down shift to a hair over 1k but now its around 2.5k at 25mph or so and I'll have to speed up and let off to get it to down shift (jerks my noggin back Laughing ). Also,I get clunks... When in park if I go to reverse or to drive again comes the *pause* then a clunk that will sometimes shake the car lightly....

Considering how low of rpm's it would run after shifting through the gears at pretty much all speeds is it possible that I was somehow hitting OD while in drive? Cause now it seems like I have less gears and harder shifting.... I dont get it Laughing Confused .

Is my tranny on its way out or what?.... Fluid is a nice clean red if that helps (I know nothing about transmissions). 2.8 w/ 700HR I think its called @136k now.

Thanks Smile .

i can't help with your issue, but i can help you on your termonology.
the transmission is called a TH700r4. it satands for Turbo Hydromatic 700 Reverse 4 forward speeds. i don't know what the 700 means.

EDIT*
actualy i do have an idea about how to fix it. five speed swap Cool

It sounds like you dont have enough tension on the TV cable (it's not a detent Wink ). If you tighten it up some it'll raise the transmission line pressures, so it can shift into the next gears, as opposed to it just slipping around everywhere.

The TV cable shouldnt be used to adjust shift points

I don't know why they picked 700. Typically with The TH350 and TH400, the numerical designated the amount of Ft/Lbs torque the transmission could handle in stock form.

As I understood the th350/400 designations, the th350 was for 350 and smaller engines. The th400 was 400cid and up.

The proper way to adjust the cable is to press the lever in and pull the piece all the way back as far as it will go. Then turn the throttle to WOT and it will ratchet to proper position.

Wow... I didnt expect this many replies so soon. It's funny you mention that Tony,Rod and I were talking about a 5 speed swap (but my schedule is sooo hectic right now Sad ). And Twilight, thats exactly how I did it (and have done it before which is why it suprized me this time). It shifts nothing like any automatic I've driven which is why I was wondering. I was told these transmissions are pretty durable (especially behind a 2.Cool so I wont worry about it.

So technically I only have 3 gears while in drive but only 4 in overdrive? Either way its not as good as five huh? Thank you for explaining it to me. I always ponder what the letters and numbers mean when describing transmissions.

I'm gunna try tinkering with it today or tomorrow and see what happens after that. Or beat the hell out of it and see what happens lol.

Thanks everybody! Smile

you technically have 4 with overdrive, and the lockup of the converter acts as kind of like a psudo 5th gear. the "3" position on your shifter is your actual 1:1 gear.

On my V6 I actually run the TV cable disconnected. It shifts hard especially with the billet 1-2 gear servo thing. Why I do it is so it doesn't downshift on me if I'm powering through a corner.

You may have to reset the cable a couple of times before you get it just right. All my encounters with it seem to suggest that.

If you pull the ratcheting extender piece out more, it will take more pedal for it to downshift, but it will do it softer.

I dunno if you are adjusting it correctly but you are supposed to push the tv cable into it smallest possition and then go full throttle it will require good amount of force to get the cable to adjust. This should set it correctly.

Well I think I found the problem....

Can I just pull the wire out a little and secure it somehow or can this piece be replaced?

Thanks.

Wow man, you broke it good! You're going to need to buy a new cable. You might try to glue it? Its a tricky connector end because it slides to let some slack out.

Ok,doesnt seem like it'd be that hard to replace but just to be sure this is the "transmission shift cable" and not the "detent cable" correct?

Thanks.

Edit: I think I'm wrong here, finally found my Haynes manual and its showing the throttle valve (tv) cable and all that... But a parts site I'm at is only showing either the tranny shift cable or the detent cable.... Confused

All it means is you have to shift for it. I like it like that, but I guess I'm a little different.

That is the detent cable. Its not bad to replace. There's a 10mm bolt on the tranny that holds the cable down, and then the snap fitting on the top. I would advise against using a parts store brand as sometimes they don't fit right at all. Go GM, new or used.

Thanks.
