so my brakes...ya, i have been eating the rotors for a couple weeks now and it has gotten to the point where i am scared to drive my car so i have stopped and as such i need to get new brakes badly...right now i am getting ahold of the dude with the LT1 that needs a tranny that aaron posted about, and if i end up not getting that i need a brake kit for my car.


the point:

any ideas? i figure if i am spending money on brakes i might as well upgrade, ease of install and cost are the biggest considerations, i want good rear brakes though...whats the suggestions from you guys?? i tried to get ahold of ed miller on TGO but he is too busy to respond to my PM to i need other sources now as i need brakes yesterday!!

if you have 82-87 discs i have an extra rotor you can have for free if chris does not want it. i told him he could have it and keep forgetting to get it out of my car. Rolling Eyes

i put "1LE" 89+ brakes on my car (factory rear discs on cars 1989 or newer) and have no complaints. one thing i did notice was that it did not realy add any more stopping power over the drums in my 1986 car. since 75%-90% of your braking is done up front you are not realy going to notice a change unless you change your rear bias. giving the rear too much braking can cause some interesting things to happen under emergency stops.

what i did was install an adjustable proportioning valve so i could get the rear bias just right (fronts lock up at the same time or just before the rears). once i put my LS1 front brakes on i will be able to dial in more rear braking and THAT is when i will notice the increase over the rear drums. (which will be hidden by the increase in front braking).

my 1LE rear brakes cost about $500 for everything. that includes new fluid and stuff too. ALL the money i spent. i started with a bare rear end so i had to get hard lines, brake cables, backing plates, calipers, rotors, pads, hardware. my LS1 front swap is (so far) costing less.

other options you have that should fit under stock 16" wheels are:
"LS1" (1998+ fbody) brakes.
C4 brakes
C5 brakes (rears clear 16" ?)

i know you don't want to hear it, but search the brake board on TGO. you can learn alot.

I'm just as bad as you with forgetting to grab it. Most times I see you you're driving the White bird and not the GTA.

If we can get to my headliner before Cows, I'll snag it from you then.

Your car is an '89 so it should already have the "1LE" brake package IIRC. I would just replace the rotors w/ stock style (from schucks or whatever), and if you really want to mod brakes, do something to the fronts, you'll actually notice a difference in stopping power then, as Tony stated earlier.

yeah, i think it was john that told me not to bother with a rear brake upgrade, "just keep the drums" he said. kinda wish i had listened, could have $500 to spend on something else. Shrug

You can consider it upgrading from the downgrade atleast lol. Plus we put the 9 bolt in at the same time, which needed disc brakes anyways. You could always just mock it up as 9 bolt install price Wink still probably worth it in the long run.

yeah, it would have taken some work to get the drums on the 9-bolt anyway. they never put drums on a nine-bolt to my knowledge. it at least would have needed re-drilling of the backing plates, but screw that, discs baby. it's a GTA, i can't roll drums Cool
