My RS is throwing an intermitent code 24 (vehicle speed sensor). My '89 service manual says to see 'section B - intermitents'. I can find no such section! The code only pops up occasionaly on start up. Anybody have experience with the VSS. I don't have an auto, so the VSS isn't controlling the TCC. I have no cruise control or an electric speedo, so what is the VSS controlling? Idle?

The only thing I can think of is the output of the buffer on the back of the instrument panel. On my 89, I tried to make the speed controlled volume on the radio I have work by splicing into the green wire which inputs to the buffer, the computer didn't like it and threw that code at me.

sorry to get off topic, but Al, about the SSV, you are supposed to splice into the VSS input wire at the ECM harness. it's color should match the color on your 4th gen radio harness. there is a thread about it on TGO i read a while back.

ignore how he does it in the pictures. HACKJOB. but at least he says which wires to use.

That's the first place that I tried. Apparently the 2000 pulse per mile for TBI motors is not enough to make the SCV on the radio work. The harness didn't come from a 4th gen, therefore I had to put a wire in the appropriate hole (actually soldered inside the radio).

Bt back on topic, all I can think of offhand is the buffer itself may be starting to go out, or you have an intermittent connection behind the instrument panel.

I vote buffer too. That's really the only electrical part of the VSS besides the computer.
