can suck my (insert body part of choice here). what a BS task. I got all the bolts off, but the "y" pipe rests against it. So I cannot move it even a litle bit to get the old gasket out or the new gasket in. To make matters worse, the drivers side front "Y" pipe bolt is stuck, and I mean permanent. It is so rusted on that I started to bend the stud. so i can't get the "Y" pipe off. And of course I discover this AFTER getting the engine mounts off, and wiggling the cherry picker into place. now, I would just slap it back together with the old 50,000+ miles gasket and hope for the best, but unfortunatly it is in several pieces, so guess I am just going to glob a bunch of RTV in there and "make" a gasket.
and my throught hurts from swearing...
when I do this job on the GTA I am pulling the engine first. _________________ 86' firebird (Junked in 2015). 88' GTA (sold in 2020).

I replaced the oil pan gasket AND rear main on my camaro without pulling the engine or transmission. :O)
Gotta have the right parts, and the exhaust has to come down. |

yeah, if that exhasut came down it would be for the last time. and i ma not in the mood to replace a manifold.
perhaps i'll order some headers from Pacesetter and then next time when i pull the engine this summer i'll put them on.
headers.....
so about my engine. while turning it over to align the crank gears i heard a hissing sound in my oil pan. like air escaping around rings. thats not good is it... |

| Now you know why I wouldnt have dropped the pan. Totally un-needed work. I dont even loosen the bolts.. for the v/6 or v8. The v/6 is actually easier, to do without loosening the bolts on a v/8 requires some timing cover modification. |

Sorry for not posting something more constructive, just seemed like alot of work you didnt need to do.
Do you have a good torch? If so heat that exhaust nut up until its cherry red then try to turn it. It should turn as long as it stays red. If there's a spring on there, you'll need to replace that when you're done. Be careful of setting something on fire. Have an extinguisher, air hose, or garden hose on hand. |

Tony, why don't you just sawzall the "T-pipe" that crosses under the pan off? Then you can get to the oil pan and seat the gasket properly...plus you can always have that pipe re-routed at an exhaust shop.... shouldn't be more than like $45-60 depending on where you go...
You eliminate one exhaust flow restriction...and you can get access to the pan...Brilliant! _________________
