|
|
::: no one was hurt :::
so I took some folks out to the local range today and I put about 40 rounds through
my friends dads Ruger new model Blackhawk .357.
for the unaware: .357 revolvers can also shoot .38 special. .38 specials can NOT shoot .357. these
rounds are the same with the exception of the .357 being longer and more powerfull. in a way .38 special
is like .357-short (think .22 short). but I digress...
I was shooting off the last of some .38special reloads my dad had lying around, I had purchased
him some new ammo and I was traking the old stuff. about 40 of the 50 rounds I shot through the
.357 blackhawk. all went fine until the last round I put through it, it was a dud. instead of a load
crack I heard a muffled pop, i also did not see the target react. (targets react when shot with a .357),
I assumed that the round had fallen short due to a bad powder load. I put the firearm away as I was
out of ammo (that was the last round) and did not notice THIS until I tried to run a bore brush
through it hours later.....
the projectile STOPED in the barral of the gun, about 3/4" in. I tried to tap it out with a sturdy
cleaning rod unsuccessfully. I will be taking it to the gunsmith tomorrow. my friends dad said
that it was not my fault and that he would pay for it but i will have non of that.... my fault
for using crappy reloaded ammo. from now on FACTORY LOADS ONLY for me. if not in my own
firearms at least in borrowed ones. looking back on it now it was a pretty inconsiderate thing
to do, borrow someones gun, shoot subpar crap ammo through it, and have one fail. I am
sure not going to add to it by making him pay for my mistake.
more on the story as it develops.....
on the up side I had alot of fun at the range. _________________ 86' firebird (Junked in 2015). 88' GTA (sold in 2020).

Damn, it's your lucky day that you didn't have one more shot to fire after that dud. That's why you always stop and check things out after any kind of strange missfire situation. |

AWSOME! after posting this I decided to Try one more time (with a BIG cleaning rod this time) and it came
right out. it just needed a little more force behind it.
EDIT*

absolutly. I learned this lesson the easy way.it is faster and easier to look down the barrel with a
flashlight then it is to replace a gun, grow new hands, grow a new face, or resurect myself from the
dead ( a worst case scenario, but not impossable) |

| It was most likely a shell that someone forgot to put powder in. Just the primer will push a bullet into the barrel and will make a real weak POP sound. |

Good thing nobody was hurt. At least it ended well and you had fun instead of something bad happening. _________________

If you haven't already, you should take a firearms safety course. You will learn how to react to these situations among other things you may not already know. And it's certainly better than learning from the school of hard knocks! A local hunting and sporting goods store will have schedules and be able to sign you up. Another option is to inquire with a club that operates a firing range. They will teach you proper shooting techniques, firearms handling safety, and range rules. All these things will keep you safer and at the same time improve your accuracy! |

i have actualy taken both an NRA baisic firearms saftey course and an NRA youth hunting saftey course (took this one when i was 17). however my buddy geoff and i were thinking of both taking concieled carry saftey courses in the near future. you can never know too much about firearms saftey. |

Uncle Sam provided one for me too. I used to be an expert pistol shot, but that was quite a few years ago. _________________ 92 Camaro
