|
|
Ok,
Iam just about ready to order gages,
Iam looking at summit for the Autometer 5 inch dia. Ultra light (maybe I should go with the 3.5 dia), they have two of them, electronic and mech speedo's, Both appear to have the .104 square drive hole for the speedo cable. so what is the difference in the two types?
We have an 88 Camaro so, do we have the electronic gage in it now.??
Thanks

| 88 should still have a mechancical speedo. If you went with the electric gaugue, you would need to get the VSS sensor from an electical speedo car (86+ firebirds, or 90+ camaro). |

If you go back and look at my pictures... the tach and speedo are the 3.5" models.
You want the mechanical... unless you convert to vss like john said. Which I actually recommend.
With the electric, you never have to worry about what gears are in the back or the speedo gears. You just press a button, drive by mile marker, press the button again and you're calibrated. |

Wow,
its that easy to calibrate?????
Doesn’t matter what rear end and what Speedo gears..
So do you have a speedo cable??????
How hard is it to switch to a electronic VSS ????
Iam thinking there must be a wire that hooks to the speedo gears or the cable, then to some box that converts to electronic pulses????
Where can I find some info on that one??
Thanks |

I have another question on the gage,:
How come you didn't go with the 5.00 dia?
I think the stock gages are 5.0, was it because there wasn't enough room in the dash for the other gages?
Looks like a 5 dollar difference in price.
Iam thinking we are going to build a panel in a different location for the other gages. |

| I would look on TGO, I think you should be able to use a factory VSS sender, it just replaces the speedo cable. I do not know if you need to change the gears inside the tranny or not, but either way, I think you will need to pull the tranny, to take the cable out, and put the VSS sender in. |

Because the 5" were too big to fit in the standard console. It came too close to the mounting points (I reused factory) plus I wanted the 3 smaller gauges in there too aswell as turn signal and brake light.
You don't have to change gears at all. It just picks up what the VSS puts out and adjusts it to an actual milage. Autometer wants you to go 2 miles start to stop. I did mine on the fly and it's within 1 mph.
On the back of stock speedo there is a speed buffer optical sensor (little yellow box) it spits speed back to the ecm and the cruise as a "buffered" signal. On the back of the autometer it has an output for "buffered" but I don't know how compatible it is with the factory ECM. THe C950 doesn't use speed input.
Check tgo or something about the autometer buffered out or contact autometer directly.
What tranny are you running? If it's a thirdgen tranny, you can go get a VSS from a bird '87+ for that trans. It's 2 wires. One wire goes to the speedo, the other is ground. The VSS plugs in right where the sotck speedo cable goes. You'll have to pull the tailshaft off and remove the stock speedo gear. I don't know for sure, but there may be something you have to put onto the tailshaft for the VSS to pick up.
Tailshaft removal is cake, especially on an auto. 5speeds aren't too bad. go to Tremec.com and they have a full step by step t-5 disassembly manual in pdf form. |

I've seen that shop man, you're son is getting one hell of a cool childhood.
Those snout hoods always look bad when not on an LS1 bird IMO, but if you want a functional scoop with the Stealth Ram, that'll do it. Personally I'd take a shorter cowl or the Jongbloed, something more like this....
But to each their own.
*Edit: Could even go with an IROC Turbo, although that's getting kinda pricey...

Ya that is nice as well.
But it looks like we are going to get the G&t Ram air hood/ as soon as I can get a hold of them. I want to know if the got an unfinished hood on the shelf.....I need it here in time for x-mas....The kid likes the aggressive look of that ram air hood, best one I have seen yet anyway. So we will try and buy one of there unfinished hoods, I think the bolt on, But he wants hood pins up front. I guess we could make it a lift off, what do you think???
Also, another question about gages. For the o2 sensor air/fuel
I have been looking at some that have a digital read out; will they work with a narrow band o2 sensor????and will it work with a wide band o2 when we upgrade???
What one do I need? Looks like some have different voltage inputs??
Thanks

I've never liked those hoods. the ram air has always looked goofy on camaros as well, to me anyways. here is a good pic of camaroguy18's from tgo. he pulls it off well.

DO NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Get an Air/Fuel gauge unless it's designed to run WB. The narrow band ones are NOT accurate. All they will tell you, is if you are richer or leaner than 14.7:1.
The best getup I've found is the XD-16 w/ LC-1 from Innovate Motorsports.
http://www.innovatemotorsports.com/xcart/product.php?productid=16164&cat=262&page=1
Come with LCD self dimming gauge, controller, and WB.
You can also run the C950 off of it, which is what I'm doing.
I believe there is a narrowband output for it too. So you can hook the WB reading up to the gauge, and the narrow to your ECM (for a factory ecm that doesn't take WB).
Super easy to install. |

Ya you are right, not going to buy one yet, will do when we upgrade the o2 sensor to wide band.
Man those are nice looking gages.
thanks

Why not just run pins up front with a bolt-on hood and just delete the latch? I'm assuming you guys want the pins more as a style thing than a safety improvement. |

| When I had my 72 malibu with the factory cowl hood, I had hinges, hood latch and hood pins. The hood just shut down over the pins, then you could lock it down. |

Ya, man every time I look at this thread and the pic of the hood above, OHHH Man that’s nice.
To bad I can't show that pic to my son. Guess he will have to wait..
Ordered that baby today, sweet……. he has been talking about that hood for a few days now....hhehehe.
And yes, got hood pins coming as well, will use them and all the other hardware. But they will be just for looks, he likes the way those hood pins look.
