""When you make assumptions, you make an ass out of you and me"

So, I learned something today that I was rather delighted about with my 84' V6 (No, the Cylinder head didn't just magically repair itself)

I think I have a 3.42 rear.

I knew it didn't have posi, but always assumed the gear ratio for the 84 SC's with a 5 speed was a 3.08:1 and that Automatic 2.8's in 84 got 2.73's.

Apparently not.

According to the RPO sticker (which is orginal to the car and was removed from my old console by me and re-adhered to my new console) I have GU6 as my axle code, which should be a 3.42

This was further verified by TGO in there Tech Data Section saying that the Manual Trans LC1 V6 cars came from the factory with 3.42's.

Shrug

Yup, I had an 83 Bird with the 2.8 and it had a 3.42 rear. It died a horrible death a couple years ago. Of course the Bird went through hell for the couple weeks that I had it before parting it out. Did a little wheeling. Laughing

because then I have to decipher the Casting number to find the gear ratio. It'd probalby only then tell me if it was a 2 series or 3 series carrier.

Taller gears: 2.73's
Shorter gears: 4.11's

Hope that clarified.

My '89 V6 had 3.42 gears. In fact if anybody is looking for an axle it's for sale and it's cheap.

If you open the diff (you need to change the fluid anyway, right?!!) Laughing spin the axle until the markings on the ring gear come around, the exact number of teeth of the set will be stamped right on the gear, leaving NO chance of error. Should be 41,12

Yeah, I am still around Smile No new 3rd gen yet, but I did see my old red one drivin around the area the other day, it brought a tear to my eye. I miss my car and hangin with the crew.
I'm still driving around in the family sedan (ford tauras). I'm still living in Hillsboro. My kid is getting fricken big, he is almost 2 now, oh and I am still married Very Happy. I will watch the forum a bit more to find out when you guys roll out to PIR or for gatherings in the Portland area. Would like to see ya'll again.
