Just curious as I would like to do this in the future. What would it take other than the rear end to put on rear wheel discs?
I was fishing around in the junkyard on Saturday and found a '91 Firebird with a disc rear end. I figure it would fit on my Camaro. Only problem is the car is upright and sitting on the ground, so getting it off the car would be difficult. I know nothing about the gears it has or if it is posi, but the guy behind the counter said he would let it go for about $250. |

What JY were you at? As far as I know disc's were almost non existant on anything but upper TA's and GTA's in 91. (It might have some more stuff that someone else, ala me, might want. ) Those will have the more desirable PBR style calipers. It might be easier to swap the calipers to your rear. There's a few how-to threads on TGO about it. Basically cut off the top part of the drum axle flange and bolt on a disc one that'll accept the caliper abutment bracket.
If you do that, I've got about 4 different types of ebrake cables that get it working again. _________________

I was at Eastside here in Bremerton. Most of the Third Gen F-Bodies were pretty well picked apart, but this bird had a disc rear end. One of the discs was gone, the other was pretty crusty, but hey, I'd have to put new ones on anyway. Counter guy said it used to be his, that's how I knew it was a '91.
I'll have to try to get with you sometime (no rush on this) to see what you have and to see how to do this. |

Wait, was it that black GTA? He said he pulled the motor/trans for a street rod or something? |

It was a black one, and yes, he said he pulled the motor and tranny. |

Well at least you don't have to worry about anybody taking those brakes. Those were there when I did my axle swap a year or so ago. |

the best part abou this swap is you will not need a new prop valve. all 89+ cars (disc or drum rear) have the same prop valve. |

I suppose. It needs a new carrier bearing as well as the races. The clutches and internals look great though. The races should be easy to replace. _________________

why would you think about putting a carrier in, without putting new bearings on it? |

bearings are like $6/each. For that price, I would replace them no matter what.

I don't know shizzle about rearends, guys. Just the slight basics. If it doesn't need a carrier bearing, then that's one less thing to worry about. _________________

to answer your initial question, YES that is all you need. if you have a complete rear end out of a car with rear discs all you need to do is pull one and put the new one in it's place. while it was out however, i would take the oportunity to replace a few things... new pads of course, i would also go to braided steel lines erls sells a kit for a reasonable price. i would also put new banjo bolts in for peice of mind. as long as the rest looks ok it should be fine. |
