Okay, now I'm talking about the 4.3's vortec heads and stuff. Does anyone have any info on them vs stock tbi heads? Beneficial? I thought I heard this at one point... I can get ahold of some basically free vortec heads with almost not miles on them. Would these be better than the stock heads on my 89 tbi motor? _________________

Yeah, I sold off all my v8 crap and have succumb to the genius design behind the tbi v6. I even traded the t56 straight up for a slipping powerglide. Man, did that guy get screwed! ha!
No, this is for my blazer!
Ditching the IFS. I got my johnny joints in the mail so I can start on the long arms now. |

I did that swap. Nickel and dimed me to death. $250 intake, head work, $70 rocker studs, nuts bolts gaskets etc) Thinkg I had like $600 into it. Fuel pump couldn't keep up, needed TBI spring. Needed MAJOR tuning.
Worst swap I ever did. I put a V8 into an S10 and it was easier, and ran great lol.
I couldn't hardly get it to run it was so lean. I read this all with a wideband. Also, the TBI stuff doesn't log fast like the TPI stuff does. So you can't get accurate (what's going on at the time) info.
Goodluck. That's all I've got to say.
If I still had the rig and didn't do the swap, I'd think about a supercharger kit before I went with the vortec swap. BTW, it didn't feel like there was much more power, and my milage went down. Even after I had it tuned decently. |

I've got basically the whole upper end for $80 at the local pull-a-part. I thought about aport efi setup with the stock manifold drilled for injectors. Could a '749 ecm be able to control it since it controlled the sy/ty 4.3? Since it never saw boost it wouldn't matter about that kind of programming under boost, right?
Maybe I should just swap a v8 in. |

So you're looking at putting the CPFI in it? That might work.
Which ECM is the 749? If you run multiple injectors, you need something like the '730/'165 ECMs. I think the Sy/Ty would work, but I'm not sure if you can run it with a single bar map. If you run it with the st/ty map you'll loose resolution.
Get that other measurement yet? Hehe I'm anxious! Need to know so I can either plan to get it or get the steel one started. |

The 749 is basically a 730 with a 2bar map and some other mild tweaks. I only mentioned it because I have one sitting here not being used. I've already wanted to do a multiport swap on it since it'll be my off camber wheeler.
I'm not sure how the 749 programs works but I figured it had separate tables for fuel/timing under boost?
shizzle, I forgot already about the DS. Lemme go measure. |

John might chime in about the 2 bar vs 1 bar.
The problem is the computer only reads the table so much. So wit hthe 2 bar, it cuts out alot of the non boosted table, so it can add cells for positive vacuum. |

| The 749 should work with a 1bar map. I am not sure what mask you would need to run though. Since you can run it with TBI, or Port injection, I am sure there is a 1bar MAP setup that used the 749 computer. I would check on TGO for the posts about running a 749 with a 1bar MAP. |
