So guys, not being a very good tranny guy, my friend's question and hopes lie with you dudes.

He has my exact car, year and all. Some dumb person put that worthless shift improver 30 dollar kit in it a bout 5k miles ago. His problem is, even with the throttle valve adjusted and that kit, which isn't much, he can't seem to hold drive at WOT. It slips out and tries to over rev. sometimes he can coax it into holding by slowing applying pressure.

What needs to be changed? Good shift kit and what, a corvette servo?

All help and two cents is appreciated guys!

ahahah. Very Happy I know,

but would a shift kit solves this or is it a sign of something more?

Because I personally with just a nice shift kit and good rebuilt tranny, stockish, can hold the rpms just fine.

Guys???

Unless it has been modified to do so, a 700R4 will not hold in Overdrive at WOT. From that perspective it is working correctly. A shift kit will not change this. I believe that there is a specific governor that has to be changed to do this. Someone else may know the part name.

K hold on..... Drive? Or OD? Which selection is the shifter in, and at what rpm does this happen?

700R4s have a 3-4 Shift uhhhh governor. It makes it so you can't be WOT in 4th gear(OD) You can be 3/4 throttle, otherwise it will shift down and act like it's free reving.

OR you've lost OD and it's time for a rebuild. The clutches are slipping.

Need more info.

I asked about drive guys. Not OD. I know the OD limitations, were just talking about a scenario like this:

1st and second are strong and able to hold to any rpm.

3rd, as in drive, feels fine, but say you punch it, it will sometimes grab and then seem to slip out, but if you ease into it, slowly push your foot to the floor, it will seem to hold it till near red line, then slipping out. That shift improver kit, the crappy one, does claim to only improve 1st and second, so maybe a complete kit would do the trick.

Shift kit??
would a new servo help?

Thanks again,

Dylan

If you think the clutches are still good... grab a covette 700R4 Servo, and a Transgo shift kit.

It's fairly involved, but you don't have to take the trans out to do it. Just be clean, and don't lose any parts!

The 3-4 Upshift gov and the Lockup Converter are independent of each other.

the shift kits typically include a "vette servo" since they are so cheap, and make a huge difference in 1 - 2 shift, and slightly in the 2 - 3 shift. It makes no difference in anything above 2nd gear though. Chances are, that kit he got was probably a servo... only lol.

Spend the bucks on the Trans Go shift kit and dont worry about it again Wink

Like said above though, it is possible that drive is wearing out, and it's time for a rebuild. If the transmission is starting to slip out then it'll need a complete rebuild, otherwise the metal shavings, etc will just recirculate into the fresh parts.

Of course, it could just be a improperly installed shift kit with chinesium parts Wink

Be sure to check fluid. Might hook a fuel pressure gauge to one of the ports and see if you've got good pressure. Don't ask me what reading "good pressure" is. Just what I was told to do by several shops, if I still had the trans in the car when I was having problems.

Thank you guys, good info.

From what we know, his tranny was rebuilt, but probably with only a servo kit, which I hadn't thought of.

we will go trans go and then take a peak inside that monster and see what its problem is.

Thank you all.
