Just ordered for my 89. Dakota Digital VHX line. Stepper motor driven needles, black gauges and red backlight. Also SGI-5 E to send VSS to the ECM.

That are really classy looking.

Now if only they made them with a tach that went above 8k.

I don't think I'll be at 8K any time soon, but the digital display below the tach can be selected for tach and will read significantly above 8K. 9990 to be exact.

I think 8k is totally respectable. Happy birthday to AL!

Painting the panel black I hope? Pretty slick really.

... Seeing as a 305 TPI makes most power between 9K -11K rpm, right?

Doesn't come with the bezel, will be using one of my own. I might have to figure out what to do with the idiot light windows though, probably just leave the lenses in and paint black - maybe even insert some cool graphics...

Paul, what is the VSS output of this T56? I've been told 4K ppm, which would be perfect, but the Dakota Digital box is still necessary since my ECM requires 2K ppm.

17 pulse per rev of the speed sensor.
It equates to more than 40K ppm depending on tire size.

So does that equate to 17 pulses per revolution of the drive shaft? If so, that would be 17 pulses per tire revolution. I can figure miles from tire circumference.

Yes, 17 pulses per driveshaft revolution.
The driveshaft is spinning faster than the tires by a multiple of the rear axle gear ratio.

Let's see if my math works.

My tires are 275/40/17 and turn 786.3 revolutions per mile.
3.73 rear gear makes the driveshaft turn 2932.9 revolutions per mile
17 pulses per revolution would total 49,859 ppm

Dakota Digital SGI-5 should be able to knock that down to 2K for my ECM

Yes, that's right.

I have a SGI-5c and I was planning to use strategy #3 from user manual and see how that works.

I have a friend that used strategy #2 and that worked with his aftermarket gauges in a '69 Camaro.

I haven't received anything yet, there is a 4-6 week turnaround on the gauges. From the info I got here, I may end up using the same strategy, but need to do some reading first.

Looks as though I can do initial setup and leave it alone since I can calibrate the speedometer...

Yes.

You really can't ruin anything. If one strategy is totally off, then try a different strategy. You can download the user manual from their website.

I just looked t the installation PDF and found out I may not need the SGI-5. The system can accept VSS from 4000 up to 128,000 ppm and provide an output of 4000 or 2000 ppm for stuff like cruise control or radio volume - didn't say anything about ECM input requirements though, I would imagine it should work.

Since these come without a bezel, and the metal piece behind the bezel apparently won't fit (mine is painted red), I have couple of extras and decided to try some accent painting on the plastic. If it doesn't look good, I can always use one of the others unpainted.
