PAINTERS! I got some advise but I'm not sure it's super accurate. The only paint jobs I've done were color changes. This, is not.
Here we have the Scort. '99 Ford with psoriasis from the weather.
The advise I was given for this sort of job was:
-1500grit to remove the flaking clear and to scuff the rest of the paint
-Prime/seal bare spots (there are a few small ones from rocks)
-Clean joints/cracks/molding etc
-Things removed: door handles (also painted), front bumper cover, antenna, spoiler.
-Pull rubbers back and prop them up
-Tape off glass/rubber/etc
-Leave doors/trunk/etc closed
-Hit with modern single stage paint
-Clearcoat
-Live Happy.

Will work. That's actually more then a Maaco would do. Cleanliness is the biggest thing. Wax, silicone, armor all will be your worst enemy.
That said.. I'm still shocked the scort still lives. |

Is buying a Focus RS, a solution to get a proper escort face lift? |

The RS is the first small car I've ever considered buying for myself. Going to be a performer! |

MazdaSpeed 3 **could** have been the hatch to have, if they had just made it AWD.
Focus RS looks awesome, but you also know the "drift" button is going to cost a ton in insurance costs. I wish I had the scratch, the new AMG version of the GLA, looks really cool.

Yeah, we're just trying to get it along for another few years. No crazy new Focus models lol.
So I understand I can prop all the rubber moldings up so I can paint under them. I assume I should prop them up first, then begin the 1500grit? _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

Ya, anywhere you want paint to actually stick you need to get under to clean and sand. This is actually not sounding so much like a cheapie job. It should come out pretty nice the way you're doing it. More prep work then a maaco deal. |

Figured. One of those details about not having done it this way.
I had talked to Al about his job, and it was more pricey than we wanted.
Looks like this should be fairly inexpensive and quick. I was under the assumption I'd have to sand harder, seal, prime, seal, paint which was going to be a lot of work.
At this level it shouldn't take very long at all. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |
