I was at a friend's place two days ago... my family and his... when we got a frantic phone call over the speaker phone from his 16 y.o. daughter... she had a "nail in" her "hand," and needed to "go to the hospital."

Her dad is a firefighter/paramedic and her mom an operating room nurse. They told her to come home, they'd look it over and take her if she needed it.

On the phone, she was freaking out. By the time she got home, she was much calmer.

The picture, bad as it is, is from my cell phone.

The nail nearly came through her hand; the board, about 2 feet long, was still attached.

Needless to say, they took her to the hospital where she was put in surgery.

Fortunately, there wasn't any permanent damage and, it appears, she won't need any further surgery.

She was on a beach area next to the Columbia River here locally known as "The Bottoms." Tripped and fell at a camp fire, extended her arm out to break her fall and landed with all of her weight on that nail.
