Does anyone know how to get the piece of ABS plastic that sits atop the door panel off without damaging the door panel itself?

It's held on by those sheet nuts, but they're put on upside down. Almost impossible to remove without a special tool. I used a needlenose plier and got inside the recessed hex and with a lot of difficulty, was able to remove them, after a couple of turns, a regular set of pliers was sufficient. You can see the results in this thread, though I never did take pictures of the nuts removed.

Roll the window down and take the whole panel off the car first. Makes it much easier.
